Action Cures Fear
“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”
Dale Carnegie
In the world of self help, perhaps Dale Carnegie could be considered the Godfather of the subject, and his quote above certainly holds true in so many facets of life. We can analyse situations, we can think and plan, and be subject to paralysis by analysis, but nothing really happens unless you get up and do something. That’s when you find out whether you can do something or not. So what are you waiting for?
Just joking!
But seriously… What are you waiting for?
Need a little more persuasion?
Here you go then.
Psychologists tell us that there are six main mood states. Of those six there are five that could be thought of as negative: fatigue, anxiety, confusion, anger and depression. There is only one positive mood state, and that is energy (or enthusiasm), which is underpinned by exercise. And here’s the kicker… to change the top five negative mood states into something positive, get up off your bum and move about. It is as simple as that.
Our brains are wired for us to be moving, and there are numerous scientific studies that show we think better when we are active; our bodies shifting and moving creates increased positive brain activity.
In fact exercise is often used to treat depression, anxiety, and other negative mood states.
Do a bit of exercise, move about a bit and tell me that you don’t feel better. I dare you! Fun fact: walking up and down a flight of stairs six times has the same effect on your brain as drinking a shot of espresso.
I have so many clients who walk into the Power of One Fitness gym who are angry, cheesed off, under a cloud, grumpy and more. Within a few minutes of the workout starting their mood starts to lift, and by the end they are smiling, joking, laughing. It happens so often that one client has called the sessions his “Davecetemol”. Not sure if I am breaking any trademark laws by using that, but hey! It’s not me. It is the exercise that is providing the relief.
But what if you want some of that magic, but don’t know where to start?
It certainly can be confusing. There are so many different types of fitness and exercise regimes, all of which have their proponents shouting loudly across social media for your attention as they all proclaim that their way of doing things is the best. It is understandable why you might be confused by it all, and that confusion is one of the negative mood states you want to break out of.
Need help?
I’d love to have a chat with you, and help you start to move out of that confusion (see what I did there?), into a life of more happiness and less fear with more health, increased strength, better fitness and perhaps even a life where you don’t mind keeping the lights on! 😉
