All You Need is Love!
“Exercise because you love your body, not because you hate it.”
Anon
In this newsletter a few weeks ago, Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution was examined and how being adaptable can be a great thing when it comes to your health and fitness. Darwin often gets a bad rap for talking about the survival of the fittest, when he was actually talking about those species that are most adaptable. However, this tenet was only mentioned in his book “On the Origin of Species”a couple of times, whereas he mentioned love over 90 times!
And that is an important point to make.
Being adaptable is great. Yes.
Being fit and strong is great. Yes.
But getting there doing workouts you hate is not great.
So finding things you love to do is very important, and why two of the key questions on the new client interview for Power of One Fitness is “What types of exercise do you enjoy?” and conversely, “What types of exercises do you dislike? (and why do you dislike them?)”.
You are more likely to stick to a workout or exercise that you enjoy doing, or enjoy the challenge of completing, than you are if it right royally sucks or makes your knees (or any other body part) shriek at you. And in sticking to the workouts you are far more likely to be consistent in your approach to exercise and thus far more likely to hit your goals of getting fitter, stronger, leaner and healthier.
As long as the reason for wanting to be all of the above is because you’d like to show your body some love, not because you despise it. That great quote at the start of this newsletter, which has been used before for the Valentine’s Day edition, can’t be attributed to any particular person, but the sentiment behind it is awesome.
Yes, I know! Of course we are human, and it is entirely normal to have bits of our body that we wish we could change for ‘the better’, or wish that our bodies would allow us to do certain things.
However, it’s been said before and I will keep on saying it: Our bodies are amazing bits of kit that work so hard each and every day to keep us alive despite what we do to them. If we show those bits of kit some love by exercising and working out, eating well and getting enough sleep, we will get repaid many times over as the muscles get younger (yes they will!), our brains become sharper, our lung capacity gets bigger, our hearts get stronger, and so much more happens to make our health improve. (There is so much science – reams and reams of it – to back up all of this, but you probably don’t want to read about each individual paper).
So show your body some love, because you love it, and start to change those things that you think could be ‘better’.
And no… It is not too late to start. As has been posted on some of the Power of One Fitness social media channels several times over, it is never too late to start. Your body will adapt and change no matter what age you are.
