It’s never too late!
“It is never too late to be what you might have been.”
George Eliot
The last two editions of this newsletter have been about challenging yourself to be more; to be fitter, stronger, healthier (or to write a book!). And challenging yourself is a great way to make improvements. Some people just need that little nudge and they are off. Others need to carve out a bit of time to undertake the challenge. Some might have to figure out how they are going to tackle the challenge. And all of those things can become a barrier to actually starting. However, there’s a belief that stops more people from improving themselves than lack of time, motivation, or knowledge. It’s the belief that they’ve left it too late.
And if we are talking about health and fitness they might believe that they have left it too late to get fitter. Too late to feel better in their body. Too late to undo years of sitting, stress, or neglect. It’s an understandable thought, but it isn’t true.
The idea of “too late” feels convincing because it’s familiar. It gives your past more power than your present. It turns time into a barrier rather than a resource. And once it’s there, it quietly shuts down action before it even begins.
But “too late” isn’t an external reality. It’s an internal belief.
And that matters, because beliefs can change.
Wherever you are right now – however unfit you feel, however long it’s been since you last exercised, however many false starts you’ve had – you can still move forward. Not in some dramatic, overnight way, but in small, ordinary steps that add up over time. As regular readers of this newsletter will know, one of the mantras that makes an appearance quite often is” “Start small, and build slowly.”
You don’t need to start with a full hour in the gym. You don’t need to overhaul your life. You don’t need to become a different person.
You can start slow. You can go for a walk. You can drink more water. You can move a little more than you did yesterday. That’s not “too little”. That’s exactly how change actually happens.
There’s a saying that you might have heard before: “The best time to start was yesterday…” It’s usually followed by something more useful: “The second best time is now!” That’s not meant to create pressure. It’s meant to release it. Yesterday has gone. You can’t do anything with it. Today, however, is still open. And whether you use it or not is entirely up to you.
One of the most unhelpful comparisons people make is between where they are now and where they think they “should” be. That gap can feel discouraging. But it’s the wrong comparison. The only meaningful comparison is between today and tomorrow. Today might be the least fit you’ll ever be. Not because things magically improve overnight, but because once you take action, even small action, you’ve changed the direction you’re heading in.
Fitness, strength and health don’t require youth. They don’t require a perfect history. They do not require punishment for past choices. They only require permission – permission to begin where you are, rather than where you think you should be. And that permission can only come from you. No one else can change your habits. No one else can take the first step for you. But equally, no one else can stop you once you decide that your future matters more than your past.
You’re not too late. You’re not broken. You’re not behind. You’re not disqualified from feeling better in your own body. You’re simply at the beginning – and beginnings are usually quieter and more ordinary than we might expect. They often look like a short walk, a glass of water, or a decision made without drama.
“Too late” is a prison that only exists in your mind. The door isn’t locked. It never was. You’re not too late. You’re just on time for a new beginning.and know this: that you absolutely can be fitter, stronger and healthier. As the quote at the top of this page says: “It is never too late to be what you might have been”.
And while no one can take that first step for you, having someone in your corner to guide you once you’ve made that decision, can be invaluable. And I’d love to be able to help you become a fitter, stronger and healthier human being.
