Softly, Softly Catchee Monkey
“If you can change your mind, you can change your life.”
William James
When was the last time a stark, scary fact actually changed your behaviour?
If facts were enough, no one would smoke, drink too much, eat too many biscuits or skip workouts. You’ve seen the warnings: Smoking Kills, Too much sugar causes diabetes, Lack of exercise leads to early death… and yet, people continue to do all of the above and more. Why?
When I first became a personal trainer, I was all about the data. If I could just show people the facts, I thought, they’d leap into action and change their behaviours. Calorie deficits! VO2 max! Charts and studies galore! “Please listen to the science people!” Except… that didn’t work nearly as well as I’d hoped.
Turns out, facts alone are pretty rubbish at changing minds.
This idea isn’t new. As economist and diplomat J.K. Galbraith once famously said, “Faced with a choice between changing one’s mind and proving there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy with the proof.” We’re not wired to respond rationally to facts alone – we’re wired for connection, for belonging. As humans, we respond so much better to an emotional connection with other people.
Even Einstein had a cheeky take on it: “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.”
So, what’s really going on?
🔍 Tribes Over Truth
We humans like to think we’re logical creatures, but really, we’re social ones. Deep down, we want to belong. For most of our history, being part of the tribe meant safety. Being cast out could mean death. So, keeping the peace with your group often mattered more than being right.
As psychologist Steven Pinker put it: “People are embraced or condemned according to their beliefs.” Sometimes, believing what your friends and family believe keeps things simple and safe. That’s why trying to convince someone with facts, when it contradicts their “tribe’s” worldview, usually backfires. They dig their heels in deeper (even if they might know that they are in the wrong).
It’s not because they’re stupid. It’s because they’re human.
🧠 But How Do Minds Actually Change?
Surprisingly, the people most likely to shift our thinking are the ones we already agree with – on almost everything. Not a stranger shouting stats, facts and figures, but someone familiar, someone who “gets” us. Studies show that we’re far more open to new ideas from someone we trust.
Kindness goes a long way here. Interestingly, the word “kind” comes from “kin”. So being kind – genuinely kind – is a way of saying, “You’re safe with me. You belong.”
That’s why, when I work with clients, I don’t just throw them into a training plan and bark orders. We collaborate. I want people to feel ownership over their goals and their progress – because when they do, the results actually stick. It’s not about forcing change. It’s about building belonging.
💬 Who I Work With
So, who am I inviting into the tribe?
Honestly? Anyone looking to make changes for the better – particularly those who’ve lost their fitness along the way and want to feel strong, healthy and capable again.
That might sound like:
“I wish I didn’t ache every morning.”
“I’m exhausted just climbing stairs.”
“I’ve signed up for a 10k… help!”
“I’m sick of relying on tablets.”
I especially love working with busy professionals – people who’ve spent years building their careers, maybe raising families, and somewhere along the line their health took a backseat. I get it. I’ve been there too.
Even if you don’t live nearby – or don’t think you’ve got the time – my online coaching programme means we can work together wherever you are. You’ll get personalised fitness and nutrition support, plus the accountability and encouragement of someone who’s in your corner.
You won’t just get a plan – you’ll get a place to belong. A place with encouragement. A place where you can feel safe as you make the changes needed. So, if you’ve been meaning to get healthier, fitter and stronger, or just feel more like yourself again… I’d love to have you join the Power of One Fitness tribe. Get in touch, as I’d love to chat with you about how we could work together to get your fitness, strength and health back on track.
