The Power of Tiny Gains: Why Busy Doesn’t Mean Broken
“Nearly everything awesome takes longer than you think. Get started and don’t worry about the clock.”
James Clear
If you’ve ever looked at your calendar and thought, “I don’t have a spare second, let alone an hour for the gym!”, you’re not alone. Between meetings, emails, school runs, endless to-do lists, and that little thing called “life”, getting fit and strong or eating well can feel like trying to run a marathon in flip-flops. Uphill. In the rain. Into a headwind. While being thrown sweets.
But here’s the good news: You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight to start feeling stronger, fitter, or healthier. In fact, according to James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, it’s the tiny changes, repeated consistently, that bring the biggest results over time. He calls it the power of tiny gains – getting just 1% better every day.
Hopefully that sounds more doable. No military boot camps. No kale smoothies the size of your head. No massive “change everything at once” terrifying thoughts. Just small, steady tweaks.
Here’s the maths:
If you get 1% better each day, that adds up to being 37 times better by the end of the year. But if you get 1% worse? Well, you can imagine where that road leads.
Now, for the busy bees out there, this is hopefully music to the ears. Because it means:
10 squats before your morning shower? That counts.
Swapping your sugary afternoon snack for a banana or a handful of nuts? That counts too.
A brisk 15-minute walk between Zoom calls? Yep. That counts.
These aren’t life-changing on their own, but stack them up? Game changer.
“But I’ve missed the boat, haven’t I?”
Absolutely not. Whether you’re 28 or 86, it is never too late to start making these tiny changes. We’re not talking Olympic athlete status here – we’re talking about feeling stronger when you carry the shopping, having more energy after lunch, and sleeping better at night.
One of the biggest myths out there is that if you didn’t start young, you’re out of luck. But guess what? Muscles don’t care how old you are – they respond to effort, not birth certificates. The body is wonderfully adaptable. Give it a nudge, and it’ll nudge you right back. Or as I was saying a lot during the pandemic, “Show your body some love, and it’ll love you back.”
Here are a few easy wins to sneak into your day:
Kitchen squats – Waiting for the kettle to boil? Drop a few squats. Yes, seriously.
Stretch while you scroll – Instead of mindlessly thumbing Instagram, do a bit of shoulder rolling or stretch out those tight hips.
Deskercise – Neck rolls, calf raises, seated leg lifts. Your office chair is now a mini gym.
Drink more water – Boring? Maybe. Essential? Absolutely.
Go to bed 30 minutes earlier – You’ll thank yourself tomorrow. And no, watching just one more episode doesn’t count as self-care.
Be kind, be patient
Don’t beat yourself up if life gets in the way. You’ll miss a walk. You’ll eat the cake. That’s being human. The trick is to keep coming back – not to perfection, but to progress.
Remember: small steps, taken consistently, beat massive leaps taken occasionally. Every. Single. Time.
So here’s to you – the busy professional who’s realising that you don’t need a spare two hours and the perfect training plan to get started. You just need a minute here, a choice there, and the belief that your future self is worth the effort.
