The Real Wealth in Life
“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”
Mahatma Gandhi
Last week this newsletter was titled: ‘The One Investment You’re Probably Overlooking – the investment in yourself – and I just wanted to reinforce that message this week. The American entrepreneur and author, Jim Rohn, once famously quipped: “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”. And looking after your body makes sense.
One of my favourite quotes is that beautiful quote by Mahatma Gandhi: “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” To me, it’s a sentiment that feels more important now than ever.
We live in a world that often glorifies the hustle and commodities – the shiny new car, the high-flying job, the latest gadgets. But Gandhi, in all his wisdom, reminded us all those years ago that none of it truly matters if we’re running on empty or if we are suffering from ill health. Because what’s the use of a glittering lifestyle if we’re too exhausted, anxious, or unwell to enjoy it?
I’m sure that most of us have had moments (or even years) when we’ve taken our health for granted – remember being in your 20s? Whether it’s burning the candle at both ends, skipping meals, or brushing off that nagging backache, we’re all guilty of it. But when something does go wrong – whether it’s catching a cold, facing burnout, or something more serious – suddenly, all the ‘stuff’ in the world can’t hold a candle to simply feeling well again.
Good health gives us the energy to laugh with friends, to chase after grandkids, to walk in the park on a crisp autumn morning. It allows us to be present – to enjoy the little moments that are, in truth, the big moments.
And let’s not forget: health isn’t just physical. Mental and emotional wellbeing are just as vital. A peaceful mind is worth more than a pile of gold bars (and arguably takes just as much effort to protect!). Looking after ourselves means saying no when we’re overstretched, making time for rest, staying connected with others, and reaching out when we’re not okay.
So, this month, how about putting your health – your real wealth – back at the top of the list. I’d encourage everyone to do one small thing each day that supports your wellbeing. Maybe it’s taking a brisk 10-minute walk, drinking an extra glass of water, calling someone for a proper chat, or just taking five quiet minutes to breathe and reset.
And no, it doesn’t necessarily mean spending loads of money on fancy supplements or posh gym memberships. True wellbeing is about consistency and kindness to ourselves, not perfection. Small things done every day soon add up.
In the end, the best investment you’ll probably ever make isn’t in property, shares, or a new kitchen. It’s in your own health and happiness. Because when we’re well, we can give more, do more, and enjoy life in all its messy, magical glory. Remember, you are your greatest treasure.
