Why That Programme You Found Online Isn’t Working (And What Actually Does)
“Great programming isn’t just sets and reps on a spreadsheet – it’s coaching with intention.”
Joseph Lucero, CSCS, strength & conditioning coach
Right, let’s be honest with each other for a moment.
You’ve done it. I’ve done it (admittedly years ago, before becoming a personal trainer, and strength & conditioning coach… but I’ve definitely done it). We’ve all screenshotted a workout from a fitness influencer, downloaded a “12-week transformation” PDF, or borrowed our mate’s programme because he “got great results with it.” And then, three weeks later, it fizzled out. Your motivation’s gone, the shoulder’s niggling again, and you’re back to square one wondering what’s wrong with you.
Here’s the thing: nothing is wrong with you. The programme was wrong for you.
The Problem With “One Size Fits All”
Generic programmes are built for an imaginary person. Someone with no injuries, unlimited time, a fully kitted-out gym, and crucially a personality and set of preferences that match whoever designed it. That person doesn’t exist. Certainly not in your inbox.
You, on the other hand, are a very specific human being. You’ve got a career, a family, maybe a dodgy knee from your five-a-side days, forty-five minutes three times a week if you’re lucky, and a genuine loathing of burpees. None of that gets factored into a programme downloaded by ten thousand strangers.
What Actually Moves the Needle
Real, lasting results come from training that’s built around you, not the other way round. That means taking into account:
Your goals – strength, longevity, muscle, better golf, keeping up with the grandkids. They all demand different approaches.
Your starting point – where your body is right now, not where a 25-year-old fitness model’s body is.
Time available – a programme that assumes five gym sessions a week is useless to someone who genuinely has time for two.
Equipment – home gym, hotel room, full commercial gym, resistance bands in a suitcase. Train with what you’ve actually got.
Injuries and niggles – worked around intelligently, not ignored until they become full-blown problems.
What you enjoy – because consistency beats perfection, and you won’t stick with something you dread.
What you don’t enjoy – equally important. If you hate the exercise, we find another way to hit the same goal.
This is the difference between a programme that gets followed and one that gets abandoned on page four of a PDF.
So What’s the Alternative?
This is exactly why working with a personal trainer or strength coach – someone who actually understands you – tends to deliver results that generic plans simply can’t. It’s not about willpower. It’s about having a programme intelligently built around your life, adjusted as you progress, and refined when something isn’t working.
That’s precisely what I do, whether that’s in person or through the Power of One Fitness app, which lets me build and deliver fully individualised strength programmes to clients wherever they are in the world. Same principle, same personalised approach, just delivered straight to your phone.
If you’re over 40, busy, and tired of programmes that were never designed with you in mind, it might be time to stop searching for the “perfect” plan online and start building one that’s actually perfect for you.
