New Year, New You? … Again?

Do you feel like an extra in ‘Groundhog Day’, replaying the same script over each year?

If you do feel like you are continually going around on a wheel each year, where everything changes but everything stays the same, you are not alone. The French have a wonderful saying, “Plus ca change plus c’est la meme chose” (the more things change, the more they stay the same).

So if you feel like each year you have the same resolution – that you are going to fitter, healthier, stronger, insert your own wish/want here – you are not alone. You are one of many millions who start the year with great intentions but by the second week of January have fallen off the wagon they boarded a few short days previously.

Often with that fall come feelings of, “Oh… F**k it!” and “What’s the point?” You failed at the resolution once, so that’s it! There’s no point in continuing. Right?

Quick note: to self: YOU ARE HUMAN!

We mess up. As a species. As groups. As individuals. That’s what we do.

Give yourself a break. So you ate a whole tray of doughnuts, munched through a huge box of Malteasers, demolished a box of wine, or all of the above combined.

So?

Does that make you a failure? Does that mean the rest of the year is to be wasted? You might as well give up until next New Year’s Eve?

Possibly. Or you could practice a little self-compassion and realise the blip for what it was – a blip. How did it make you feel? Rubbish? Ok. So how could you feel better? Take a step in the right direction?

Just try to be a little bit better every day.

It is that simple.

Just a little bit better.

Every day.
