A Brave New Dawn?

A Brave New Dawn?

Live news teaches you some incredibly strong lessons: that every day is a new day, and it’s never too late to fix something.

Nancy Dubuc, Former CEO of Vice Media

Well, that’s it then. All over for another year. The decorations put away. The tree taken down. All over bar the memories, and possibly the slightly bloated feeling of all that festive cheer. Maybe you’ve already broken those heartfelt New Year’s resolutions. And you’ve already probably been bombarded by umpteen different ways or products to change your life for the better. Sheesh! Seriously? Don’t be disheartened though. Without wanting to be too upbeat in this come down after Christmas (or without sounding like Rob Schneider in pretty much every Adam Sandler movie): You can do it!

You can get through this.

You can be fitter, leaner, stronger and healthier, without buying into the latest craze, hack, quick-fix or “surefire” way to do so. Make changes for the better. Absolutely. but…

And this is a big BUT…

Just change one thing at a time.

As the former CEO of Vice Media says at the top of this newsletter, every day is a new chance to fix something.

But please don’t try to change everything all at once. To do so might cause overwhelm, ultimately leading to failure, as your brain can’t cope with all that change at once and you give up on the great idea of starting to be better in whatever guise your goal is: fitter, stronger, leaner or healthier.

I’ve said it before, and I will keep on saying it. Slow and steady wins the race.

Our brains can accept changes to how we have habitually done things. But it takes time for the brain to forge the new neural pathways and get to grips with the new normal. And so as to not overwhelm our brain (leading to the “Aw! F**k it! This is too hard” thoughts), it is probably easier to accept any changes if they are smaller or individual changes.

My advice is to pick one thing to try and change at a time. Oh. And start small too.

Doing so will allow your body to cope with all that you are now asking it to do, as well as recover between sessions. That will mean your body won’t be put under too much stress that it is not used to, ends up breaking down and you become injured.

It may be that brave new dawn, and well done for making that decision to make some changes to your life. Just don’t try to do it all at once. Your body will thank you for it and you will accomplish so much more in the long run.

And if you do want to make a change to be fitter, stronger, leaner and healthier, but are not at all sure how or where to start, please do get in touch. I’d love to have a chat with you about your goals and how we could work together to help you achieve them.
