Until You Can’t

Until You Can’t

If you got a chance, take it, take it while you got a chance. If you got a dream, chase it, ’cause a dream won’t chase you back.

Cody Johnson

Those of you who know me well enough, know that I am a country music fan, and one of the best songs of this year is a song entitled ‘Til You Can’t by Cody Johnson. The lyrics struck a chord (excuse the obvious pun!) with me, as the subtext is all about not putting something off because you might not get another chance.

While the song touches on the usual range of topics covered by country singers – love, fishing, automobiles, family – the sentiment could be applied to anything and anyone: don’t put things off waiting either for a better time to do them, or because there might be something else happening right now which takes your fancy over what is, long term, the better option.

So of course, I saw the obvious connection between the message behind those lyrics and health and fitness. (well, hey… it was obvious to me!)

When it comes to doing things for our health and fitness there are so many “pending better offers” out there which may well take our fancy in the moment, but won’t really benefit us in the future.

Workouts can suck. Big time! (#SpoilerAlert: They can also be fun, challenging, and more!)

The sofa is warm and cosy. Big time!

Choices. Choices. Choices. Why are there always choices?

However, if you think about it, those choices don’t have to be the binary either. You can do both. There is an adage in time management circles about “eating the frog”, which means doing the thing you’d least like to do first to stop any procrastination you might be feeling. Get the potentially sucky thing out of the way and then move on and do the things that you enjoy. The same applies to your health and fitness. Do the workout first, and then enjoy a TV programme or a book on the sofa. Go for a run first, and then enjoy your lovingly prepared dinner. Simples! Oh and you might just feel awesome after the workout or run. Just saying! 😉

Your future self will thank you for taking that time to do today. To quote the Godfather of modern training, Jack LaLanne, “What I do today, I am wearing tomorrow.”

So we can put off getting fitter, stronger, leaner and healthier until we can’t.

It is a choice we make every day, and some of you are awesome at ‘eating that frog’. Others not so much. And that’s cool. Life sometimes gets in the way. As does work, or family. But if you can do something, anything, it is better than doing nothing at all.

If you aren’t sure about how to go about doing that something, then please do get in touch. I’d love to chat things through with you; your goals, your health aspirations, what you’d like to be doing in twenty or more years time. I’m waiting to hear from you. 😀
