What is your WHY??

What is my goal and why?

Having a goal is a great thing. It provides you with an end point to aim for. Whether that is in life in general or in relation to your health and fitness.

It might well provide impetus to getting you started or keep you going. However, if you don’t fully know your ‘WHY’ in relation to hitting that target it may seem too big or too far away.

What do I mean by that?

Your goal is your goal. Surely.

In a health and fitness scenario, you might have heard people talking about being “jacked,” “ripped” or
“strong.” Those are fine goals, but in the grand scheme of life they don’t mean much after all is said and done. No one is lying on their deathbed regretting having slightly smaller biceps.

How about going much deeper and asking the bigger question: “Why do I want to build muscle / burn fat /gain strength?”

When these real reasons become your focus, you won’t become another New Year’s resolution drop-out stat.

Let’s take another couple of examples which are also common: “I’d like to lose X pounds” or “I’d like to drop two dress sizes.”

Those are brilliant goals, but straight away the next question should be, “Why?”

The answer may come back, “Because I used to be that weight / size.”

To which there’s another question, “What would it mean to you to be that weight / size?”

Can you see where this conversation is going? We are drilling down into the real reasons for change. Each answer is met with another question until you know for yourself why you want to change. This may be a complete surprise to you or it may uncover a deep held desire for change. Whatever the reason for change is that you discover, it will help you on your journey.

As a coach, it is important for me to understand your ‘WHY’ too, so I can help you move towards your goal.

As life goes on, continue to add reasons for changing based on the new phases of your life. As an example, here a few of my personal reasons for strength training to get you thinking:

  • To build inner strength and purpose
  • To look good for my wife
  • To have more energy and increase productivity To look the part of a trainer to be a billboard for my business
  • To set an example for clients and those I meet To care for my body so I can do what I want to do and be who I want to be
  • To defy the traditional expectations of ageing

Each of these reasons leads towards its own particular why; some of which intertwine, some completely separate. However, I know why they are important to me.

Maybe the examples above aren’t things that matter in the context of YOUR life. So find what does matter to you. When you connect being stronger, leaner, fitter and healthier to what you want and value, the reasons for doing it keep adding up, and you are more likely to hit that goal, whatever it is.
