What’s the worst that could happen? – Have a sensible chat about fitness

Let’s re-frame that… Today is National Face Your Fears Day in the USA; celebrated on the second Tuesday of October every year. Whether you have a deep-seated fear of public speaking or are terrified of spiders, this day is an opportunity to step out and overcome things that are holding you back.

When it comes to health and fitness, it is often our fears that hold us back from achieving what we would like.

Fear of failure.

Fear of potential discomfort.

Fear of stepping out of your comfort zone.

Fear of not knowing how to do something.

Fear of…

There are many different things of which to be fearful, but as I often ask my clients when trying something new, “What’s the worst that could happen?”

Perhaps a different way to look at that question, could be to reframe it into another one: “What’s the best that could happen?”

A simple example could be lifting a new weight. The worst that could happen, under proper instruction, is that you can’t lift it. So what? You couldn’t lift it before, and you can’t lift it now. That doesn’t mean you’ll never be able to lift it. We will just do other work and revisit it again in the future when you will be able to lift it.

The best that could happen is that you can lift the weight, you set a new personal best and feel totally awesome about what you have just done. You do a little happy dance while wearing a huge smile, and wander round the gym fist bumping and high-fiving random strangers (okay… maybe not, but you get the idea). That new personal best in turn spurs you on to do more and carry on moving towards your goal.

Making a decision to become leaner, stronger, fitter and healthier is a great life choice, but doing so can be daunting. I get that.

But if you focus on what would be the best that could happen, things may well become easier.

So facing you fears and reframing that advertising slogan from the late 1990s could well lead you down the path of existential happiness and on the road to Nirvana. Probably not, but it could well help you get started moving towards being leaner, or stronger, or fitter, or healthier, or any combination of these.

And you may need support to help you do so. That is totally understandable. The world of health and fitness is full of misleading and confusing information. Trying to navigate it on your own can lead to paralysis by analysis as you try to figure out what the best way to hit your goals would be.

Which is where hiring a professional comes in. Someone who will listen to you, get to know you, understand your likes and dislikes, as well as try to figure out with you the driving force behind your desire to be fitter, leaner, stronger and healthier – your WHY.(more about that in another newsletter)

Let a professional help you, support you, celebrate every little win with you and get you hitting your health related goals.
